Also earlier this summer, I was granted an exciting opportunity to explore a medium that I’ve been meaning to sink my teeth into for a while: concept art. As many of you know, I love scifi and fantasy. I love movies with imagination, that transport you, that create worlds. These are the films I want to direct one day. And all of them require having a large staff of concept artists to help the key creatives fully realize the world of the film. So it makes sense that I should try my hand in concept art-ing. And this past June, my friend and colleague, screenwriter Murat Izmirli, gave me that chance. He had just recently finished his epic scifi spec BLACK and wanted me to draw some concept art for it. So I did.
BLACK is a terrific script. It’s a very imaginative, funny and transportive scifi about an exiled female military brat who is forced to captain a prison ship in search of a dangerous renegade super-soldier. There are lots of cool weapons and imaginative alien landscapes. So a big challenge for me! But have a look for yourself. I’m happy with how far I was able to push it. And I had a ton of fun doing it.
